Tirunelveli: The provisions of the Domestic Violence Act 2005, which came into effect on Thursday, were invoked for the first time on Saturday when the police arrested a person on a charge of injuring his wife.

An employee of the Tamil Nadu Water and Drainage Board, 47-year-old J. Joseph was remanded on the basis of a complaint from his wife Benedict Mary (37), a teacher. According to the complaint, Mr. Joseph allegedly beat his wife with an umbrella on the night of October 25 when she refused to hand over money she got from leave surrender. Ms. Mary suffered injuries .
